The Eagles (2-1) intercepted 49ers quarterback Matt Johnson five times, returned one of those for a 48-yard score and added a 100-yard kickoff return from Adrian Wilkins at the start of the second half to manhandle Charlotte.
Jordan Reid passed for 178 yards for NCCU, while Augustus finished with 80 yards on 16 carries. Deyonta Wright scored the other offensive touchdown for the Eagles.
The game started slow, but NC Central controlled the ball for the first three quarters.
Kicker Oleg Parent hit field goals of 39 and 21 yards to put the Eagles up 6-0 in the first quarter. Wright’s four-yard score in the second quarter sent NCCU to the locker room at halftime, up 13-0.
Wilkins greeted the Charlotte special teams by going end to end to begin the third quarter.
Tony Williams IV made his presence known with the Eagles’ third interception of the game at the Charlotte 48. Williams raced up the sideline to make it 26-0.
Charlotte did not get on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter when Alan Barnwell ran it in from two yards out.
However, Barnwell, who fumbled to halt a CU scoring drive in the first half, scored between Augustus’s two- and five-yard touchdown rushes.
By the time Lee McNeill replaced Johnson as the 49ers signal caller and scored on a ten-yard run, it was just a preview of a potential quarterback change at Charlotte.
For his part, Johnson completed 35 of 52 passes for 335 yards
Notes: Deyonta Wright fumbled into the hands of Charlotte’s Mark Morgan in the first half, but Mike Jones intercepted Matt Johnson on the ensuing series to negate the turnover…both Oleg Parent and 49ers kicker Blake Brewer had field goals blocked.
