We currently live in a high speed society. Everyone wants everything to happen instantly without any effort or responsibility. Think about it. We have drop boxes to return dvds, drop boxes to make deposits into our bank accounts, and drop boxes to return library books.
So let’s just say Rutherfordton County, NC citizen John Doe decides he is tired of taking care of Fido or Fluffy. So he gets into his vehicle and drives over to the convenient Animal Control building and shoves his unwanted but still loving and trusting pet through a hole in the side of the building. They are conveniently marked "Dogs Only" and "Cats Only." Kind of like two trash cans side by side, one marked "Recyclables" and one marked "Trash."
However, let’s examine this whole drop box method through the eyes of Fluffy and Fido. They get into a vehicle fully trusting their master not to do anything to harm them and then find themselves driven to a frightening, unfamiliar environment. As they walk towards the building they can hear barks, howls and meows of distress emanating from a hole in the side of the building. Fluffy and Fido become resistant filled with terror at what their own fate may hold for them. They look to their beloved master begging to be taken back home and not forced into this terrifying environment. But with one good shove, the master sends his pet tumbling into the hole and calmly walks away ignoring the pitiful cries and yelps coming from the dungeon like environment.
So what happens next to the animal that finds himself/herself on the other side of the hole? They suddenly find themselves in a cramped, smelly, filthy pen with other dogs or cats like themselves. Imagine all of these animals falling all over each other, the injuries it causes especially to the elderly or the already injured. Not to mention the fights that would break out when having so many scared animals crammed into one small space. How many animals may not live until morning when the workers arrive to deal with them?
This method is totally unacceptable and inhumane and could best be described as lazy, irresponsible, antiquated, and mindless. To think this operation is actually supported by tax payer dollars. Not even Steven King or Wes Craven at their best could compete with this real life atrocity.
The bottom line is a drop box is no place for an animal or any living thing. Eventually if this mentality is allowed to continue in Rutherfordton, NC their next step will be drop box at local hospitals for unwanted children.
This is something that needs to be fixed now! You can help put an end to this draconian, inhumane practice by following the link below and signing the petition to the governor of NC to abolish this practice. Reform is needed.
