The Parents Television Council has condemned the recent move of Comcast/NBC Universal after it was learned that their new controversial series “The Playboy Club” would cross promote with Playboy magazine. According to the PTC, Ian Biederman, executive producer for the series stated to critics that they had underwent great lengths in order to separate the two; making the television series based upon the 1961 Playboy Club. PTC charges that the show is directly related to the pornography industry as the new October issue of Playboy features actress Laura Benanti from the show. Hugh Hefner even dropped the issue's price by sixty cents to promote the show.
President for PTC Tim Winter issued a statement regarding the promotion, “NBC fooled no one but themselves when they asserted that ‘The Playboy Club’ was unrelated to the porn industry and Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine. The network’s hypocrisy was most recently exposed this week when we found out Playboy magazine would help promote ‘The Playboy Club’ and would even feature one of the actresses on the cover. This follows earlier reports that performers were required to sign nudity waivers.”
Additionally, PTC contends that Hugh Hefner narrates the television series’ pilot episode and is opening a new Playboy Club in Chicago.
The PTC isn’t the only organization speaking out about the new show. Patrick Trueman, President of Morality in Media, released a statement dooming the show to failure.
“With the debut of NBC's primetime series "The Playboy Club" this week, the network and parent company, Comcast, is celebrating the boorish and misogynistic behavior so prevalent in Playboy Clubs and the Playboy Magazine from their beginnings.
“Indeed, the October 2011 issue of Playboy, as noted on its cover, provides a guide for the sexual exploitation of women in an article titled, "Gentleman's Guide to Having an Affair." I predict that "The Playboy Club," will be as exploitive as the magazine and will ultimately fail.”
Salt Lake City has decided they won’t air the series and if other conservative groups have their way, “The Playboy Club” will be short lived.
