NBC dominates ratings for Olympic opener

More than 31 million viewers tuned in on Friday night for a tape delayed presentation of the opening ceremony for this year's Winter Olympics from Sochi, Russia. By a large margin, the telecast put NBC as number one among adults 18-49 and with total viewers.

NBC says the rating is the highest for a non-live Olympics opening ceremony since the 1992 games from Lillehammer, Norway. One small troubling sign, however, is that viewership in the key advertising demographic of 18-49 was down 9% from the opening of the Vancouver games in 2010.

The event was not without a few hitches, including a large Olympic ring that failed to deploy during part of the show. Also drawing controversy was NBC's decision to edit out the "anti-discrimination" portion of a speech delivered by IOC president Thomas Bach.
