Dateline” is an investigative program that covers crime & murder in the United States. Last night's episode was reported & narrated by Josh Mankiewicz.

“The man who wasn't there” opened with images of the American dream which is called freedom & a place to live a decent life. A family of four prospered in the United States who were supposedly living that dream. That is until it came to the murder of a lovely mother.

Ariet was from Egypt & married Magdi Girgis who wanted his wife & two sons protected. They moved into a secure & gated community in Westminster, California. On Sept. 29, 2004, the youngest son Ryan came home late & his mom was asleep. His father was gone & older brother Richard was at work. Ryan fell asleep & was awakened after a door was opened by an intruder.

Ryan fought a heavy set black male who shoved him into a closet & was tied up with duct tape. A second male came inside & pushed Ariet into the bedroom. The first male told Ryan that he knows his situation & doesn't want to kill him. Ryan later untied himself & went out of the house to call 911.

Ryan claimed that the two men were thugs or gang bangers. Richard tried to imply that Ryan knew the intruders because of his use of drugs. The police put both Ryan & Richard in separate interrogation rooms. Both the sons were told that their mother was dead & it was a murder investigation. The police began to ask a lot of questions.

The big question was why kill the mother & leave the son alive? Everyone wanted to know the answer to that question. Ariet was stabbed to death & nothing was stolen from the home. In all the blood evidence, there was no other DNA, but that of Ariet's.

Why did a friend give Ryan a knife on that night? Was there really two black thugs who broke into a secure gated community? Why did one of the men talk to Ryan like he knew him? You can watch the full episode of “The man who wasn't there” at the official website of “Dateline.”
