NBC cancels shows: NBC canceled two new shows on Friday and is making immediate changes to NBC’s fall lineup. “Ironside,” which is one of the two new shows canceled by NBC and which starred Blair Underwood as a cop in a wheelchair, is scheduled to air its last episode next week, reported Entertainment Weekly on Oct. 18, 2013.
Besides Wednesday’s “Ironside,” NBC also canceled Thursday’s new show “Welcome to the Family.” The Mike O'Malley-centric comedy has been canceled by NBC effective immediately.
After the cancelation of the NBC show “Ironside,” a mixture of “Dateline” episodes will fill the 10 p.m. time slot until the end of the year. Starting Jan. 8, 2014, a “Chicago Fire” spin-off “Chicago P.D.” will fill Wednesday night’s 10 p.m. time slot.
Since the new Fall TV show “Welcome to the Family” has been canceled immediately by NBC, Thursday night’s 8:30 p.m. shows will consist of extra episodes of “Parks and Recreation,” “The Voice,” and “The Sound of Music Live.” On Jan. 2, 2014, the audience favorite “Community” will return for its fifth season.
NBC’s reason for canceling its two new shows “Ironside” and “Welcome to the Family” after just a few weeks is, of course, ratings.
“Last night’s three-hour block averaged only a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49, just barely edging out The CW overall. NBC’s two-hour once-signature comedy block has fallen 17 percent since last year, and 57 percent since 2009.”
And what holds the future for other NBC shows – more cancelations?
“Welcome to the Family,” the canceled sitcom about two families who come together because of their teenage kids’ unplanned pregnancy, averaged only 2.7 million viewers and a 1.0 rating. In comparison, “Sean Saves the World” has a 1.2 rating and “The Michael J. Fox Show” has a 2.3 rating, which some consider to be overrated.
Unlike NBC’s two canceled shows “Ironside” and “Welcome to the Family,” “The Michael J. Fox Show” was given a pre-pilot full-season commitment, but it might be questionable whether the show will continue after that -- at least in some viewers’ opinion.
