LOS ANGELES, Calif.– Fictional cannibal Hannibal Lecter is expected to join the NBC line-up after the network purchased a new drama series based on Thomas Harris’ iconic serial killer earlier this week, according to Deadline.com
The hour-long drama written and produced by Bryan Fuller is expected to be picked up for 13-episodes providing NBC is satisfied with Fuller’s first script, the report said.
L.A. –based indie studio Gaumont International Television is developing the new series titled, “Hannibal” for NBC with international deals already in the works, according to Deadline.com.
Earlier reports said the new series will likely focus on Lecter’s relationship with FBI profiler Will Graham, which was the subject of two movies, “Manhunter” in 1986 and “Red Dragon” in 2002.
There is little doubt that the new NBC drama will have to be toned down for mass consumption, which will probably leave little room for fava beans and nice Chianti, however, with Fuller at the helm, the series will likely maintain its dark, sick quality.
The iconic cannibal Hannibal Lecter is at the center of Harris’ novels, “The Silence of the Lambs,” “Hannibal,'” “Red Dragon'” and “Hannibal Rising,” as well as the movies they inspired.
The big question overlooked by many mainstream media report is who will play the title role of Hannibal Lecter? The character was most memorably portrayed by actor Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for his performance in the 1991 thriller, “Silence of the Lambs.”
Fuller, who was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding comedy writing of a series in 2008 for “Pushing Daisies “also wrote and produced TV’s "Dead Like Me” and “Heroes.”
