NBA trade rumors of a Pau Gasol trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves might still make a lot of sense. According to a report from late Thursday night (Jan. 31), Gasol is still getting loosely linked to the Wolves and that might make point guard Ricky Rubio very happy. It seems like a perfect teammate for each of them to have, but the LA Lakers would have to take back something other than Kevin Love in a deal.
On the surface, a trade like this could help the Lakers avoid some huge luxury tax penalties and net the Wolves a player who has the veteran savvy that they need. The trade value of Gasol has dipped a bit in recent weeks, so maybe a deal involving Derrick Williams, the contract of Brandon Roy, and a few other pieces could be worked out. Williams would immediately give the Lakers some nice youth off the bench and maybe he could be molded into a really good player.
As for how the Wolves could look with Gasol, Love, and Rubio on the court at the same time; that is a scenario that should make any Minnesota basketball fan excited about next year. Fantasy basketball owners who have stuck with Gasol would certainly benefit a lot from a trade like this, because Love is out for a while. That would give Gasol very heavy minutes and allow him to possibly get close to averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game again.
This isn't the first time that NBA trade rumors have suggested a Pau Gasol trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves might be getting worked on, but maybe now is the time for both teams to just get a deal done.
