NBA trade rumors about a Jose Calderon trade have been floating around for two seasons, but the time might be right for the Toronto Raptors to deal him. As he showed on Thursday night (Jan. 24) against the Orlando Magic, Calderon definitely has the skills that could help out a number of playoff teams around the league.
Calderon has the talent to put up a double-double every night, but splitting time with Kyle Lowry at the point guard position has really cut into his fantasy basketball value. Having Lowry on the roster also gives the Raptors another option if they decide to trade Calderon before the NBA trade deadline. With this being the final season of his contract with the Raptors, they could lose him to free agency if a deal isn't worked out soon.
It's certainly worth noting that the Toronto Raptors have been playing a lot better lately and a Jose Calderon trade might cut into that success. It could just be the team getting hot at the right time, but the Raptors have started looking very good on the court with Amir Johnson and Ed Davis getting heavy minutes in the starting rotation. It has also allowed DeMar DeRozan to play a more free style and he has flourished.
NBA trade rumors will continue to float around Toronto, especially when they have an available point guard who averages 11.2 points and 7.5 assists a game. Those numbers are in just 28.2 minutes per night, but maybe the front office will hold on to Jose Calderon on the outside shot this team could make a run at the postseason.
