New 2013 NBA trade rumors have a Paul Pierce trade sought by the Memphis Grizzlies. A report from Monday (Jan. 28) suggests that the Grizzlies would like to add Pierce to the fold and that the Boston Celtics might be willing to part with him after the ACL injury to Rajon Rondo.
The trade doesn't make a lot of sense on paper, unless people in the Grizzlies front office think that an older Pierce is better than Rudy Gay. A trade like this doesn't address the payroll problems that the team already has and it gives them a less valuable trade asset after the current season. Holding on to Gay would make much more sense.
For fantasy basketball owners holding on to Gay, this could be a move that helps to improve his numbers quite a bit. There are a lot of shots to be had in Boston now, likely making Pierce a more valuable fantasy basketball asset down the stretch, but transitioning that value to Gay if he were to come back in a trade.
While there are a lot of 2013 NBA trade rumors that make sense for the franchises involved, a Paul Pierce trade just doesn't add up for the Memphis Grizzlies. It would certainly help the Boston Celtics to get younger in this fashion, but fans shouldn't get too invested in these particular rumors playing out in the end.
