New 2013 NBA trade rumors suggest a Dwight Howard trade would be in the best interest of the Dallas Mavericks. As drama continues to surround the LA Lakers this season, a report on Thursday night (Jan. 24) points out how a Howard trade would just make sense for the Mavericks to pursue.
While the Lakers haven't verbally stated that they will pursue trading Howard, the Lakers are quickly falling out of contention in the Western Conference. The front office might have their decision made for them if they start to fear that Howard is going to head into free agency and leave Los Angeles behind. This is where a trade to Dallas might make sense for both sides.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has made no secret of the fact that he wants a big-name player like Howard to come to Dallas. The team will have the money available under the salary cap to extend him a contract offer in the offseason, but a team could step in, trade for Howard, and give him a contract extension that would nullify any efforts.
The reason a Dwight Howard trade is risky is that he could still decide to head to free agency at the end of this season. That could leave any trading partner of the LA Lakers with nothing to show for a deal when the postseason rolls around. More 2013 NBA trade rumors will definitely pop up before the Feb. 21 deadline, but there are few teams that make as much sense as a destination as the Dallas Mavericks.
