NBA jersey ads: NBA to have jersey advertisements for upcoming season?

NBA jersey ads could be coming to basketball courts soon. The idea would be to have NBA players wear jerseys with advertisements on them; very similar to what the WNBA currently does. According to a report from Monday (Feb. 11), it appears that the league is now one step closer to making it a reality.

This has been seen as a good way for teams to raise revenue, especially because the companies would get guaranteed viewers during the season. An example that fans can refer to is on that Seattle Storm jersey. The team is sponsored by Bing, so the company name can be clearly read on the front of those jerseys.

The report from Sam Amico states that teams could begin selling small patches on the front of the jerseys and that it could possibly be in place in time for the 2014-15 NBA season. That might seem to be the distant future, but it would also make a huge change in the way that the NBA does business.

The toughest facet of selling this advertising space would be to figure out how the teams are going to split it. One idea is that each team keeps the revenue that they generate, but a more acceptable plan seems to be a revenue sharing system. In the latter option, all of the revenue generated from NBA jersey ads would be put into one pot before it gets shared.

As the NBA looks to the long-term health of the league, this seems like an idea that could really help smaller market teams. The risk, though, is finding the line between advertising that blends and that which presents a distraction.
