The NBA 30 in 30 is a look at each team as the coming 2013-2014 season approaches. This look reviews their current roster, last year's experience, new developments and a prediction as to where the organization will end at the conclusion of the upcoming year of NBA action.
Six consecutive years of making the NBA Playoffs may be coming to an end for the Atlanta Hawks as the 2013-2014 season approaches. A completely retooled roster, this team is team is without some of the key players that have helped them stay relevant in the Eastern Conference throughout the last few seasons.
Power forward Al Horford will be the center piece of the team. His 17.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game leads the remaining members of the roster coming into this year and with six years in the league the Hawks seem to believe he has matured into a franchise player.
Around him Jeff Teague has the opportunity to be the second option as he is coming off of a strong campaign last year. His 14.6 points and 7.2 assists per game left him amongst the best in the league and a facilitator is exactly what a big man like Horford will need. Lou Williams and Kyle Korver may find themselves in a battle for the starting two-guard position. Both are solid compliments to Teague but Korver has proven himself to be a better shooter; especially from behind the three-point line.
Paul Millsap will be a vital part of this team as he will be given multiple opportunities as Horford will draw a lot of attention. This year he has the opportunity to end the season with a double-double in points and rebounds as he came very close last season with 14.6 and 7.1 respectively.
The Hawks can employ the strategy of playing a very large roster with having Elton Brand on the floor with Millsap and Horford at the same time. That could crowd the paint, but would help them defensively as well.
The Atlanta Hawks will be a part of the convoluted race to take the eighth and final playoff spot at the end of the next year of NBA action. Unfortunately, they will fall short and not make the post season this year.
