The dead gunman in the Navy yard shooting has been identified as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas. According to Fox News on Sept. 16, what is known about the man, whose shooting rampage left 12 dead and up to a dozen others injured, is that he was once an enlisted member of the U.S. Navy. The number of dead continued to rise all morning. This horrific shooting spree has no apparent motive immediately detected. Some of the bodies still remain inside the building, including that of the gunman.
Police were looking for two other potential gunmen, but one of the men, who was a person of interest to authorities, has been found and cleared. The gunman used a stolen ID of the man police cleared to get into the building. While there may have been a second gunman, it could be that by the end of the day that they find there was only one lone gunman who did all this carnage.
According to NBC News, witnesses said they were exiting the building because the fire alarm sounded, but they had no idea a shooter was in the building. When they went out into the hall they saw the gunman at the other end of the hall. He turned and aimed toward them and started shooting. People frantically tried to get out of the building as the sounds of gunshots riddled the hallway.
One witness said a couple of people stayed put until the gunman stopped shooting to reload his weapon, this is when they made a mad dash out the door. Everyone was going down the stairs, said one witness. They were pushing each other and some people fell down. Once outside, panicked people tried to climb the wall to get out of the compound. There was one thing that most of the witnesses said about the gunman, that was, "he never said a word."
The search for a possible second gunman and the investigation into this shooting is far from over. There are a few reasons that the police believe there could be a second gunman. Witnesses report hearing gunfire coming from two different places and medical personal report taking more than one kind of bullet out of the wounds of the people who were injured, indicating more than one gun was used in this shooting rampage.
Investigators scramble to find out more about Aaron Alexis, the gunman who was shot and killed during the shooting rampage at the D.C. Navy yard. They do not know if he has any military background, but most of all the question of why, why would he go into the Navy yard and kill these innocent people on Monday morning?
