Yesterday, the nation mourned the tragic shooting of 12 at the Washington Navy Yard, in Washington D.C.
While we are still learning more about this shooting and what exactly happened, it was allegedly committed by a lone gunman named Aaron Alexis, who has been identified as a former navy reservist who was originally from New York. At the time of the shooting, Alexis was working as a defense contractor.
It is unclear exactly what set off the killing spree. Alexis was later killed in a shoot off against police, bringing the death toll of the shooting to 13.
The reaction to yet another mass shooting has sparked mourning from people around the country.
Over the past year, our nation has seen more of its fair share of shootings and terror attacks, from the school shooting in Connecticut to the marathon bombing in Boston earlier this year.
The thought of more innocent lives being taken continues to be truly devastating to see, especially since in this case people were simply showing up to work only to be attacked with gunfire. In addition, this shooting took place in our nation's capital, a city we tend to think of being a secure, safe place with the top security in the country. Sadly, no city is immune to such a tragic event.
Tonight, our hearts and thoughts are with the family of all those impacted by this tragic event.
