The Navy Yard shooter in Washington, D.C. is being described as black and about 5'10" to 6-feet tall, police say. He has a dark complexion and is believed to weigh around 170 pounds. CBS News reports Sept. 16 that the Navy Yard shooter is suspected to be barricaded somewhere and possess multiple firearms. It's unknown at this point if he's a member of the U.S. Navy.
Three shots were fired at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building on the base at approximately 8:20 a.m. An active shooter was reported on the situation. At least 10 people have been fired at with three fatalities so far. Three victims injured by the Navy Yard shooter are listed as civilians.
A "shelter in place" order has been issued for Navy Yard personnel.
An estimated 3,000 people work in the building where the shooting incident occurred Monday. How many people were inside at the time of the shooting is unknown. Security has been enhanced to full alert at the Navy establishment and President Obama has been briefed of the unfolding events.
The Navy Yard shooter is managing to evade authorities at this time and it's unclear if other shooters are involved.
