The US Navy has reported fatalities following an early morning shooting today (Monday, 16 September) at the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Headquarters building #197 in Washington, DC. The shooting took place at 8:40 a.m. ET. The gunman is still at large.
One suspected gunman is described as a tall bald black man. The Washington Post is reporting that there are multiple shooters. At the time of the 8:53 am news release by the US Navy, only one shooter was implied.
The Washington Post reports four people dead. CNN is not giving a specific number of deceased at this time, although they did report at least 10 people wounded, including two officers.
In addition, six DC elementary schools have been put on lockdown for obvious security reasons.
NAVSEA is the largest of the Navy's five system commands. With a fiscal year budget of nearly $30 billion, NAVSEA accounts for one quarter of the Navy's entire budget. With a force of 60,000 civilian, military and contract support personnel, NAVSEA engineers, builds, buys and maintains the Navy's ships and submarines and their combat systems.
