Navy Pier has had many incarnations. It has been a Naval training center, a school and a big empty, unused space. In 1989 the city of Chicago decided to fix it up and turn it into a tourist attraction. It quickly became a huge success and is the busiest tourist attraction in the entire Midwest.
It has been 25 years since Navy Pier was upgraded and it had become a bit dated and worn. So the city has decided to it was time for a face lift. It will be a major makeover and parts of the pier will be closed from time to time. Currently large parts of the pier are closed. The Ferris Wheel is getting repaired and is not operating. The main outside entrance and many of the outside seating areas of the restaurants are closed.
Navy Pier is still a fun place to spend a few hours but until next year it will not be at its best.
