YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan-Budget cuts have hit this U.S. Naval base hard by forcing some 593 senior enlisted members to retire or transfer to the Fleet Reserve following its senior enlisted continuation board.
When President Obama’s 2013 White House budget was released earlier in the week, 3,000 fewer active-duty sailors were funded than had been previously estimated for.
According to Stars and Stripes, the board met in early December and evaluated 7,684 active-duty sailors in paygrades E-7 through E-9 with more than 19 years of service.
The decisions to separate the senior sailors from active-duty were based on their individual performance evaluations, according to the news release.
The 593 sailors chosen by the board will be asked to transfer to the Fleet Reserve or retire by September 30, 2012, per a USN administrative news release published this morning.
