On USS Mahan, another Navy base shooting has occurred, leaving a sailor and a civilian dead at the Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia on Monday at approximately 11:20 p.m., according to a Yahoo! News report released on Tuesday. The shooting suspect killed a male sailor and security killed the suspect. The shooting occurred on a guided-missile destroyer – the USS Mahan - which was docked at the world’s largest naval base.
The civilian had access to be at the Naval Station Norfolk, but it is not known whether the suspect had permission to be on the USS Mahan.
The dead have not been identified and will not be until family of the victims has been identified.
Reportedly, there were no other injuries in the incident. The entire base was put on lockdown for a brief period of time, according to Terri David, the Navy spokesperson. At this time, the base’s operations have returned to normal.
This shooting has occurred approximately a month after the Navy held anti-terrorism and force protection exercises on United States’ naval bases throughout the country. The drill at Norfolk included an active-shooter drill.
Last September, 12 civilian workers were killed by a gunman at the Washington Navy Yard.
