Anyone who's ever been to Powell's City of Books in downtown Portland, Oregon knows it can be a tricky store to navigate. At 68,000 square feet, the store takes up an entire city block and rises five stories high. There's a lot of real estate to explore, and each floor is filled with books of all shapes, sizes, and genres.
Powell's has long offered a paper map to visitors to help them find their way around the store, but navigating the City of Books is now going high-tech.
Powell's has teamed up with mobile app developer Spotlight Mobile to help shoppers find their way around the store.
With the Meridian app, customers get turn-by-turn navigations inside the store to find specific titles or areas of the store. The app also lets customers browse Powell's online store, peruse that day's in-store events, check out upcoming events and browse featured titles, favorite books and staff picks. The app also lets customers browese the inventory at all of the Powell's locations, not just the flagship store on West Burnside.
Meridian is currently available for free on the iTunes store, or can be downloaded through QR code on Powells.com. Powell's says it hopes to have the app available for Android phones soon. Currently, it's only available for the iPhone.
