The suspect, 20-year-old Sgt. First Class Amos Patton - a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard - was disarmed and taken into custody after he shot two soldiers. Both of the shooting victims were treated for non-life threatening wounds at a hospital in Memphis. Major Jeff Crawford was struck in his thigh by the gunfire and a sergeant was hit in his foot. Another guardsman was grazed in his arm.
The two injured – Crawford and the sergeant – were reportedly at the facility to talk to Patton about policies and procedures. During the meeting, Patton went to his car and returned with a computer bag and waist pack. Patton then took a .380 semi-automatic pistol from the waist pack and shat at the officers. He emptied the ammunition in his gun before other guardsmen took him down.
The Millington Navy base, Millington Elementary and a nearby golf course were all shut down for a time after the incident.
