Left Behind, the first single-player story DLC for The Last of Us, will expand upon the background of Ellie when the add-on releases next month. In a new video interview posted on the official Playstation Blog on Jan 22, the game’s developers revealed that they hope that the smaller prequel story of the upcoming DLC will carry as much narrative weight as the title’s primary campaign.
Naughty Dog developers also confirmed that The Last of Us: Left Behind will have a larger emphasis placed upon exploration since the DLC will have an emphasis on non-combat gameplay. Afterall, the add-on follows two teenage girls and takes place during a time before Joel has taught Ellie how to better protect herself.
However, that’s not to say that the Left Behind DLC won’t have any action. In fact, Naughty Dog is creating new combat mechanics specifically for the add-on. These new systems will allow players to utilize tactics in order to trick different NPC groups to fight each other. One example given was stealthily luring clickers into groups of hostile enemies in the hopes that they will take each other out, or at least create enough of distraction to sneak by.
The Last of Us is out now exclusively on the Playstation 3, The first story-based DLC for the game, Left Behind, will release on Feb 14.
