While I realize the Houston weather is not always ideal, and humidity levels and temperatures continue to rise, Houston is still a thriving metropolis that offers a ton of events, parks and perks to experience both indoors and outdoors.

If you can manage the heat and humidity, and you want to work on your tan, try out some of these outdoor activities with your significant other this summer!

1. Visit the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center. Founded in 1967, the Arboretum is one of the oldest nature education facilities in Texas, and its mission is to continue educating people about the natural environment, as well as to provide a sanctuary for native plants and animals.

The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is located on the southwest corner of Memorial Park, at 4501 Woodway Drive. The Arboretum is open 365 days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the Arboretum you can get involved in various adult programs ranging from Arboretum at night, green living, health & wellness, and much, much more. Try out “Wine, Cheese and Moths” on either July 19 or August 9 for $35 (for non-members).

2. Miller Outdoor Theater. All performances at Miller Outdoor theater are absolutely free, so with upcoming performances including, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," "Mulan the Warrior Princess," "Two Gentlemen of Verona," "Henry IV," and movies at Miller, it is definitely worth your while to check out Miller Outdoor this summer. Not sure what to bring? Consider carrying food, picnic baskets, blankets, chairs for the lawn, flashlights, and bug spray, but leave glass containers and the pups at home.

3. Discovery Green Park. From blissful warrior yoga to summer nights salsa dancing, this urban haven has it all! Learn how to kayak, repair your own bicycle, or bring your precious pooch to one of the dog runs. This is unquestionably an amazing place to experience a fun summertime activity with your significant other.

4. Bayou Shuttle Service. With Bayou Shuttle Service you can kayak, canoe, cycle or even learn how to surf! Their tour guides are certified, qualified and trained to provide you both a safe and entertaining tour. If you are very adventurous, attend Bayou Shuttle Service's Surf Camp at Surfside Beach this summer.

5. Are you a runner or hoping to become one? If so, sign up for the annual Galveston Sand Crab 5K/10K that will take place on Saturday, September 6th at 8:30 p.m. on Poretto Beach. The Sand Crab is a great way to experience nighttime beach life, all while listening to music, running on the beach with the sand between your toes, and celebrating the finish with food and drinks! Don't forget to bring your flashlight or head lamp.

6. Pull out your white linen pants and check out White Linen Night in the Heights on August 2, 2014 from 6 to 10 p.m. This famously popular annual event started in 2006 at the suggestion of local boutique owners who had been displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. White Linen Night was fashioned after a similar event that takes place in the French Quarter's Arts District where residents get decked out in white linen clothing and admire artwork. This event now helps drive traffic to Houston's Heights-area boutiques and local shops.

With free admission, food, music, artwork, shopping, drinks and fashion shows to boast, White Linen Night is definitely an event that you don't want to miss.

7. Waugh Drive Bat Colony. The Waugh Drive Bat Colony is a must-see event this summer! With over 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats that emerge from under the Waugh Drive bridge on a nightly basis, this is a fun, easy, and exciting sight to experience.

8. Never been to the drive-in movie theater before? That is about to change! Watch a double feature at Tomball's Showboat Drive In Movie Theater located off of 2920, just 10 minutes west of Tomball. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children, and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Snuggle up to your significant other while watching a fun flick on the enormous outdoor screen.

9. Bayou City Bike Tours. Experience Houston in a whole new way. Cycle down the bayou, or through the historic Heights, while guided by an experienced and cycling-motivated tour guide. Although Houston may not be known for its stellar public transportation, taking a bike-tour through the city is a step in the right direction!

10. With the World Cup nearing its highly anticipated finale, what better way is there to show your support for the great sport of futbol than to attend a Dynamo game with your significant other? Go Dynamo!
