In Episode 383 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” The Truth About Thyroid Week continues with natural thyroid activist Janie Bowthorpe from StopTheThyroidMadness.com and author of the accompanying book Stop the Thyroid Madness: A Patient Revolution Against Decades of Inferior Treatment. When you listen to Janie speak, you can sense the frustration she’s had from over two decades of not knowing what was wrong with her and taking medications that are completely ineffective. In this interview, you’ll hear her discuss her lack of energy, depression, increased heart rate and exhaustion, why Synthroid was exactly the wrong thyroid medication for her, why she had to quit being a fitness instructor because of her thyroid symptoms, her “debilitating” reaction to exercising, the many misdiagnoses of her thyroid problems, the huge difference that Armour (desiccated pig thyroid) made to her health, the thyroid group on Yahoo she started which began her personal campaign against the wrong information being promoted about thyroid, what the purpose of desiccated thyroid is, the problems with finding Armour over the past year, why pulverizing the Armour medication makes it work a lot better, the most common symptoms of thyroid issues, the mistakes doctors make in treating thyroid problems, how you find a good doctor who understands your specific needs, the independent labs that you can have run where you can order your own tests without the need for a doctor, the response to her book despite the fact it is not available on bookstore shelves, and how she responds to the critics who say she isn’t qualified to speak so authoritatively on this subject. Janie Bowthorpe is a rebel with a cause sounding the horn on the literal “madness” being promoted about thyroid problems. ENJOY!

Then on Thursday, we’ll have a returning guest in neurosurgeon Dr. Larry McCleary (listen to the February 2009 interview) who will discuss the concepts in his latest book Feed Your Brain Lose Your Belly. Dr. McCleary is always a pleasure to speak with and you’ll enjoy what he has to share about the connection between keeping your brain healthy and weight loss. That’s all coming up next week on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.”

Well, that's irresponsible of you. So we're supposed to take the advice of a "thyroid activist" instead of scientists?
No, we're supposed to review the information ourselves, and decide using our ability to reason. Good on Jimmy for providing alternative voices.
Alisa,i am a thyroid activist also for the ones who have bad thyroids and cannot get any help from their drs. or anywhere else. i have fought this since the 80's and let me tell you, it has been a nightmare. if you do not have thyroid problems, count yourself lucky, many of us will do the research for you...Mary Shoman was the first activist to fight for our rights, find and talk to drs. for us, list drs. from patients all over the usa and now this lady... scientists are great, but they do not know what it is to have a bad thyroid... so go bury your head in the sand while others do the work for you...
scientists are invaluable, in medicine and other important research but they are not drs. i cannot believe your thinking on activists trying to help others, what a wonderful thing they are doing to help the patients become knowledgeable in their care. next time you go to your dr. and he wants to know why you are there, you just tell the dr. well you are the dr. you tell me... see how many results you will get unless you have them do all kinds of unnecssary tests that can cost a ton of money. Our activists are a blessing to me, it is how i found out what to ask, what to do and when to ditch a dr. that collected money and did nothing, did not do the right kinds of tests and i still felt like walking death... you cannot be blindsided to not have some idea what is wrong with you when you go to seee a dr. if you have no idea, which the net can help. you are in for a big shock..drs. are not like they use to be. you need to do your own reasearch and here other are trying to help all
us and it would be nice to give them some appreciation and be a little bit humbled for all the work they have done for us... i for one, am so blessed to have them help me when i needed it the most. Thank you Mary Shoman and thank you Janie Bowthorpe for your devotion to helping the thyroid patients who desperately need all the help they can get. you are appreciated more than you know..My sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks go out to both of you.
For ten years I have been going to the best endocrinologist supposedly in Peoria, Illinois. I need help. I have driven to Aurora, Il to see a holistic physician who refused to put me on natural thyroid , My own internist. I have seen the regular doctors and now I am in Atrial fib from being hyperthyroid to prevent a return of stage 2 thyroid cancer. I am moderately furious and discouraged by the scientists , my dear Alisa.
I may be alive but it has been nothing but a hellish existence since they yanked my thyroid and put me on synthetic hormone. They are not Gods and yet we place our lives and offerings at their feet. I want my life back.
I don't know if you would want to come all the way to St. Peters, MO, but Dr. Joe Hill, D.O. (He's in the Barnes Jewish Hospital network) put me on Amour thyroid, and he has me working with a compounding pharmacy,The Medicine Shoppe, to get my hormones balanced. I feel so much better, I'm not so tired and the brain fog has lifted. The medicine shoppes website is www.excelapothecary.com. I've also found the Express Scripts tends to not run out of Amour. I use the auto renew so I'm able to stay 30 days ahead on my prescriptions. Hope this helps. :o)
Janie Bowthorpe has worked tirelessly to help other thyroid sufferers.
I have Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis & for 15+ years the "normal" doctors DID NOT HAVE A CLUE how to help me feel better. I had goiter, red, inflamed, puffy, painful thyroid and neck, skin rash, painful joints, and "brain fog" so heavy I could barely function any more, not to mention the anxiety and depression. I tried "alternative" doctors, too, with no luck.
Through reading Janie's research I discovered that, in people like me, the adrenals need to be treated first so the thyroid medicine is not blocked from getting to the cells. Using Janie's helpful suggestions I searched for & found a dr who understood this and prescribed the medications I needed.
Thanks to Janie Bowthorpe's research of what actually works for real patients I am healing & getting my life back.
I only wish Janie had been around to help my my mother Her thyroid was removed at age 40 and she was undertreated on the useless drug, Synthroid. She suffered ill health, auto-immune disease and depression before she died prematurely at age 68. No doctor told her these conditions are all related to the thyroid even tho they should have known.
These simple, effective therapies do not have the huge financial backing needed to be marketed to drs or patients under our current system. Thanks to Janie Bowthorpe's research patients can now learn about these effective therapies.
