Natural Medicine is on The Run in Brooklyn

Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz awarded a proclamation to the runners of The Run, as well as, proclaiming November 10 – 13, 2011 as Natural Medicine Awareness Days.

Dr. Dennis Godby, ND, Co-Founder of The Run, his two sons: Isaiah, age 21, an aspiring Naturopath, and 18 year old Jeremiah, who had been battling obesity most of his life but has since lost over one hundred pounds and nephew, Jonas Ely, age 21, decided to run across the United States spreading awareness for a healthier lifestyle and naturopathic medicine.

In addition, Dr. Rebecca Asmar, ND, Executive Director of The Run, co-created this necessary venture along with Dr. Godby, in conjunction with Dave Behar, CEO of ION Network, ION Sports Network. Dr. Asmar, Owner of the Bambu Clinic in Portland, OR, stated, “I saw the run as a huge opportunity to reach America with a story about what you can do for your health.” These courageous individuals contributed an abundance of dedication and sweat while traveling across the United States informing America about alternative healthcare. Mr. Behar commented, “The level of talent within this group pulled this all together!”

Friday morning, November 11th, the Green Fig Bakery Café sponsored a breakfast buffet fit for champions and a rest/re-fuel stop for the runners to show their appreciation for what they had been contributing to this great cause since Sunday, July 17th, 2011 in San Francisco, California.

The Green Fig Bakery Café celebration consisted of healthy and nutritious foods like fiber bagels and homemade jams plus drinks supplementing the naturopaths on this quest for better health awareness, and most importantly support for these dedicated individuals on reaching the finish line.

Giuseppe, the Owner of the Green Fig Bakery Café expressed his enthusiasm by stating, “I became super excited when my District Manager, Aixa Lopez, told me about The Run.” He also stated, “I feel like I participated with the runners.”

NYC Event Coordinator for The Run and future naturopathic doctor, Caroline Budhan enlisted the Green Fig Bakery Café, Brooklyn Tattoo Gallery and King of Kings Barber Shop located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, to help this group of doctors, students, and concerned individuals complete their journey that ended in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The runners were also presented with a Recognition Award for completing the final leg of their run in New York City by the Regional Manager of Sports Authority.

When interviewed, Frank De Palma of Brooklyn Tattoo Gallery stated, “He will tell his customers to keep an open mind and to try it out.” “You are what you eat.”

Eric Aleman of King of Kings Barber Shop stated, “The runners sacrificed themselves for a greater cause and it was very inspirational. It made me want to do something.”

The runners have also planned a ceremonial run at The University of Bridgeport in Connecticut taking place Thursday, November 17, 2011.

Dr. Godby became a naturopathic doctor at the age of 48 and since then he has dedicated his life to educating America on natural medicine and healthier living.

He is no beginner to running, prior to this run, which he planned with his son Isaiah, who also wanted to run across America, he has run over five thousand miles spanning thirty three years, always to raise awareness.  Dr. Godby shared that one of his greatest highlights on this journey was, “Talking to the thousands of American people they met along the way about natural medicine.”

They were joined by various other runners along the way, such as a high school cross country team from Hagerstown, MD and the Princeton girls cross country running team. Isaiah stated, “If you believe in yourself you can do whatever you want, become a doctor, a lawyer or run across the United States.”

When I asked Dr. Godby had he received any support from MDs during this massive expedition, he responded, “We’ve received some support but because MDs are not aware of NDs; like we are aware of medical doctors the support was in small doses.”

He then went on to say, “It’s gonna take all of us to heal America, it’s gonna take MDs, NDs, teachers and the media to raise awareness in the United States.”
