While seeking a new hair stylist - after moving to St. Petersburg, Florida - one important requirement I had was to find an organic hair color stylist. Thankfully I have!
I met Yu-Lee Izyk, a fabulous stylist at Harmony Eco Hair Spa while shopping at Richard's Whole Foods (Foodporium).
When Yu-Lee told me she not only uses organic hair color on her clients, but her salon's owner, Jennifer Andrews trains other stylists on the use and application of their organic color line, Organic Color Systems, I about jumped up and down in excitement!
I had been wanting only organic color on my hair (or nothing at all) but either couldn't locate a stylist who used only organic, or had been told organic would not cover gray hair very well, distracting me from searching!
I've had my hair colored with the Organic Color Systems a couple of times now and in my experience it covers gray hair very well, contains no yucky ammonia, and is much healthier for me and the environment vs. traditional harsh chemical* colors. It smells really good (no fumes), and gives my hair a beautiful natural even tone, no brassy look. My hair feels very soft and "young" again - like when I was a kid!
Yu-Lee shared with me some other reasons to love the Organic Color Systems line: the peroxide in the color is "pharmaceutical grade", and while the color is processing, it's a physical change that is happening rather than a traditional* chemical change. (UPDATE 16-Oct-2013: Yu-Lee offered a correction from the manufacturer on this point - *this color uses a "low chemical impact with NO gaseous chemicals"). The color process employs heat and not hair blasting pH ruining chemicals!
I feel good the base of the color line is coconut oil and aloe.
Yu-Lee said, "Some other neat points in why to use organic is the run off back into the water. That's my favorite part of using this line. .. I'm feeding the earth one shampoo at a time!"
You'll really have FUN with Yu-Lee during your hair appointment with her! ;)
Here's the scoop about why organic color should be important to you:
For starters, if you are interested in living more naturally, getting chemicals out of your life (and really, you wouldn't be reading my articles if that wasn't important to you), then you probably already know most of these things.
1) Organic hair color is safer. Granted, even an ammonia free color is not necessarily safe as anything with peroxide can still cause interactions and sometimes companies can be tricky - they can say they are ammonia free then put something else in the product that is just as bad!
2) Some say, hair stylists who work with toxic chemicals nearly every day are prone to experience more chest and lung infections, headaches, fibromyalgia symptoms, and/or immune system related issues / problems. Of course this could be because they see a lot of clients, and pick up viruses, etc. Yet many doctors say no one knows the exact cause of fibromyalgia but admit certain physical stressors can be a factor (I imagine toxins could be a physical stressor - what else causes physical stress, bad diet? germs? viruses?)
3) Organic color does not contain ammonia and ammonia is much more harmful than peroxide. Granted peroxide mixed with ammonia is quite a different thing. I've seen peroxide in health food stores useful for treating skin abrasions, as a mouth rinse for dental issues, etc. so in and of itself it depends upon the strength of the peroxide that must be considered.
4) Organic color typically does not contain Lauryl Sulfates such as: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Alpha Olefin Sulfonate, DEA Lauryl Sulfate. FYI Lauryl Sulfates can cause organ damage, developmental and/or reproductive problems, disturb your delicate endocrine system, potentially be cancer causing, and irritate your skin, hair, and eyes.

I am also now using Neuma shampoo and styling products, more on that next article. I promise you'll want to hear more about them! They contain no parabens, no synthetic fragrances, no sulfates, no glutens, no phthalates, no neurotoxins, no glycols, no ureas, no carcinogens, no formaldehyde donors, no 1,4-dioxane, no aluminum compounds.
I highly recommend Yu-Lee and Jennifer if you live in the St. Pete / Tampa area - at least consult with them before putting any more harsh chemicals* on your hair - for your sake.
