Evo, Innova pet food recalled

Natura Pet Products announced March 18 that it is recalling several brands of cat and dog dry food and one type of ferret food due to concerns about potential Salmonella bacteria contamination.

The affected brands are Evo, Innova, California Natural and Healthwise. For a complete list of the recalled products, click here.

The recall, the first in Natura’s 21-year history, was prompted by testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company said in a statement posted on its website.

“During a recent random sampling, the FDA confirmed the presence of Salmonella in one of our products,” Natura said. “As a result, we have voluntarily recalled a number of our products as a precautionary measure.”

The company said it has received no reports of animal or human illness linked to the recalled products.

Natura’s statement indicates that the cause of the contamination has been found, but the company, which is owned by Procter & Gamble, did not disclose what the specific cause was.

"Most likely, human error resulted in an inadvertent violation of our SOPs" or standard operating procedures, Procter & Gamble spokesman Jason Taylor told Examiner.com in an e-mail March 19.

Although several other pet food companies, including Bravo!, Diamond and Nature’s Variety, have announced recalls in recent weeks (see story links below), the problems do not appear connected because they differ significantly and range from plastic pieces in food bags to low vitamin B1 levels, FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey said.

“I think you are just seeing a coincidental spike in recalls,” DeLancey told Examiner.com.
