“I got three messages: One, never ever give up; Two, you are never too old to chase your dreams;Three, it looks like a solitary sport but it’s a team” ~~ Diana Nyad, American author, journalist, and long-distance swimmer noted for her world-record endurance championships. Nyad was once ranked 30th among U.S. women squash players, on completing her 110 mile swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida, September 2, 2013 at 3:14 p.m.
BREAKING NEWS: Hours ago, native New Yorker, Diana Nyad has become the first person to swim from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida, without the use of a shark cage or swim fins.
Exhausted and sunburned, 64 year old Nyad on her fifth try, made her 110 mile swim to the finish line in 48 hours. Nyad had been chasing her goal for 35 years and today (September 2, 2013) at about 3:14 p.m. fulfilled her dream. Kudos and congratulations to Diana Nyad.
Born in New York City on August 22, 1949 to stockbroker William Sneed and his wife Lucy Curtis, Nyad’s father died when she was three and her mother soon remarried Aristotle Nyad, a Greek land developer, who adopted Diana. The family then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she grew up and began swimming seriously in grade seven. She was enrolled at the elite Pine Crest School in the mid-1960s, swimming under the tutelage of Olympian (and Hall of Fame) coach Jack Nelson. Before graduating she won three Florida state high school championships in the Backstroke at 100 and 200 yards (91 and 183m). She dreamed of swimming in the 1968 Summer Olympics, but in 1966 she spent three months in bed with endocarditis, an infection of the heart, and when she began swimming again she had lost her speed.
