Native businesses will compete at RES in Las Vegas for $20,000

January 10, 2014 - Entrepreneurs and small business owners will come together at the National Reservation Economic Summit (RES) Las Vegas 2014 to compete for $20,000. The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development's Twenty Grand Business Plan Competition will be held March 17-20, 2014 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

About 4,000 attendees are expected at the 28th Annual National RES in Las Vegas 2014. The 3-day Summit will feature hundreds of exhibitors, as well as business development and training sessions.

2014 Native American Business Trade Show Events

RES Las Vegas 2014 will also be host to the world's largest Native American Business Trade Show for two days. Some of the events scheduled for the trade show include:

  • 26th Annual NCAIED Scholarship Golf Tournament

  • Native American Arts Market

  • National Center Diversity Luncheon

  • Exclusive Networking Receptions

  • Tribal Business Leaders Forum

  • National Center Energy Forum

  • Electrifying General Session

  • Procurement Expo, including Tribal, Corporate and Federal Buyers

5 Steps for Entering the Twenty Grand Business Plan Competition

How to enter the Twenty Grand Business Plan Competition – Follow these step-by-step instructions for your chance to win $20,000 at the National RES 2014 Business Plan Competition in Las Vegas, NV:

1) Determine Eligibility for the Competition

  • Must have official Alaskan Native or American Indian document of Tribal Enrollment

  • Business must be 100% Canadian First Nations, Alaskan Native or American Indian-owned

2) Register for National RES Las Vegas 2014

In order to participate for a chance to win the Twenty Grand Business Plan Competition, participants must register for the 2014 National RES Las Vegas by February 1, 2014, 5:00pm PST. The 3-day competition will take place between March 17-20, 2014 at the Las Vegas, NV Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Participants will complete for a chance to win $20,000 by pitching professional presentations of their business plans.

3) Obtain Live Plan Access

After completing the registration for the National RES Las Vegas 2014, a NCAIED staff member will contact participants to give instructions, including a URL and code, for accessing Live Plan. Each participant will receive a Live Plan business plan software 6-month trial from Palo Alto Software. See LivePlan Business Plan Software features.

4) Pitch Business Plan Presentations

On March 18, 2014, the Qualifying Round will kick off the 2014 National RES Las Vegas business plan presentations:

  • First, competitors will present business plans via Live Plan. The in-person pitches will be made to a panel of accomplished and respected business leaders and entrepreneurs, who will judge the competition.

  • Eliminations will take place, with some competitors being chosen for the semi-finals, then the final rounds. Competition participants are encouraged to bring visual aids, products and other data to help support Live Plan business plan pitches.

5) Business Plan Presentations will be Judged

All presentations will be judged using the criteria below:

* Business Plan Quality – 40%

  • Financial Practicality

  • Overview of Management

  • Company Structure and Executive Summary

* Presentation Impact – 40%

  • Show proof of business experience

  • Show proof of experience and ability to execute

* Judge's Assessment and Overall Critique of Idea Potential – 20%
