Among the brands of peanut and almond butters being recalled are Arrowhead Peanut Butter and MarNatha Almond Butters and Peanut Butters. Of more importance in this recall however are the fact that the store brands used by Whole Foods, Trader Joe's Kroger and Safeway are also being recalled.
The reason for this recall is that the products possibly are contaminated by salmonella.
The company says it learned of the contamination risk after routine FDA testing.
The Food and Drug Administration says it does not know how many jars of nut butters were recalled. The company would not comment.
They were sold in Canada, the Dominican Republic, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates as well as the U.S.
The best way to avoid recalls such as this is really quite simple. Avoid these processed products and make your own. Homemade almond and peanut butters are very easy to make and actually take less time (and money) than buying them. Once you make a few batches, you'll have the process down and recalls such as this won't need to worry you. We'll share with you our recipe for making homemade nut butters.
Ingredients needed to make Cinnamon Almond Butter:
- 2 cups almonds
- 3 Tbs. cinnamon oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1/2 tsp. sea salt
- 2 Tbs. brown sugar (or raw honey)
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon (optional)
- Place your almonds into a food processor and grind them about 8 minutes. Make sure to scrape down the sides every 2 minutes or so.
- With the machine running, through the feeding tube add the oil, salt, brown sugar and cinnamon, and continue grinding until you have a spreadable mixture.
- Place the almond butter into a jar and keep refrigerated.
Note: This is pure and untouched by chemicals, so you want to keep it chilled as it can go rancid if left out for too long of a time. Before using it, stir it up.
