After a gender test was done to determine the sex of the new panda cub born to Mei Xiang two weeks ago, the National Zoo has proudly confirmed on Sept. 4 that they have a girl. They also did a paternity test on the baby panda and announced that her daddy is indeed Tian Tian who resides at the same zoo.
Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated back in March and zoo officials had been keeping an eye out for any signs of pregnancy ever since. She delivered the first panda cub with no problem. However the following day, another baby cub came into the world but was sadly a stillborn. The zoo determined that this little one was also a female and fathered by Tian Tian, making the two fraternal twins.
The healthy cub has been deemed quite vibrant and doing well. Mama and daughter are bonding and Mei Xiang is said to be taking good care of her. The small cub will not be named until she is 100 days old as keeping to Chinese tradition.
