National Weather Service in Great Falls predicts a 'Snowmaggedon' winter

According to the National Weather Service in Great Falls, brace yourself for another wild and crazy winter and spring.  Expect record breaking heavy snowfall, below normal temperatures and wind chills.  The spring run-off from the snow pack, will produce heavy flooding, more severe than spring of 2011.

A weather pattern known as La Nina, along with the Super Moon, which brings large amounts of precipitation, will again dominate meteorological cycles during the snowy months, much like it did last winter.

Michael Mercer, Great Falls NWS Meteorologist in Charge stated, “Expect colder than normal temperatures, and increased snow pack. This will set the stage for spring flooding in the Missouri River Basin, much like spring of 2011.”

Many rivers and streams are still running above normal for this time of year, and concerns for another significant flood season are growing.

“Ice jams in rivers and creeks could lead to flooding as early as December,” said Mercer.

What is a Super Moon?
A “Super Moon” is the coincidence of a full moon, or a new moon, with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth.  It is associated with both oceanic and crustal tides and is associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The name Super Moon was first coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, defined as: “…a new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee).  In short Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth.”

During a Super Moon you can expect unusually low and high tides along the coasts.  Earthquakes, ranging from moderate-to-severe, this will include 5 plus magnitude earthquakes.  Volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, powerful storms with heavy rain/snow downfall, high winds, and extreme electrical activity, including dry electrical storms that spark wildfires may occur.
