National Velvet star Elizabeth Taylor dead March 23 at 79

Two-time Academy Award winner Elizabeth Taylor passed away at Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Hospital after a six-year struggle with congestive heart disease, her publicist reported March 23.

Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor (Elizabeth Taylor) galloped to stardom as a preteen, starring as Velvet Brown (opposite Donald Crisp, Angela Lansbury, Anne Revere and Mickey Rooney) in the 1944 classic horse film National Velvet. The film, released in cinemas just before Christmas 1944, was based on a 1935 novel (of the same name) by Enid Bagnold.

Falling off a horse during the filming of National Velvet, Liz Taylor suffered back problems for the rest of her life.

The British-American Hollywood legend won a pair of acting Oscars (for 1960’s Butterfield 8 and 1966’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Additional films featuring Taylor included Life with Father, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Cleopatra.

  • Richard Burton (twice)
  • John Warner
  • Larry Fortensky
