National unemployment rate stands at 7.8 percent

The U.S. unemployment rate is now 7.8 percent. Nationwide, employers added 155,000 jobs in December similar to average gains in 2011 and 2012, according to an article by Sudeep Reddy in the January 5,6 Wall Street Journal.

"I really hope things are starting to improve. We all need to be working and if too many people are not working, fewer people have money to spend and I make less money," said Margaret Johnson, a Miami waitress.

"I am glad the economy is picking up. I am glad I have a job. I work in construction and there have been few opportunities in recent months. But I have had some offers," said Pedro Gonzalez, a Miami construction worker.
