January 14-22, 2012 is National Safety Awareness Week at participating ski areas and resorts. National Safety Awareness Week is an annual event highlighting resort safety education efforts while increasing slope safety. Resorts are encouraged to develop new and creative ways to involve employees and guests in activities for safety week. The National Ski Areas Association, along with the National Ski Patrol, the Professional Ski Instructors of America, the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, and Willis and AIG insurance companies, created the Safety Initiative campaign to assist ski area operators nationwide address the topic of slope safety education for guests. The primary goal is to attempt to further reduce the frequency of accidents, and to unify the industry to focus on and communicate a proactive, strong safety message.
So what are resorts doing? Buttermilk Mountain which is one of the four Aspen/Snowmass resorts is participating in this years National Safety Awareness Week. Here is what Buttermilk has on tap for the week:
- This year's theme is "Responsibilty is the Key to Slope Safety".
- Kids Ski School will participate in the daily Passport to Safety Treasure Hunt, and Max the Moose (official mascot of Buttermilk Kids Ski School) will stroll the area supporting safety wearing a Patrol Vest.
- There willl be a Safety Tent outside Patrol HQ, dispensing sun screen and safety messages.
- On Tuesday, 17 January, Free Safety Hot Dogs will be served to guests from 11 AM-Noon @ Patrol HQ.
- Our Wednesday SS race @ 1 PM encourages Safety, with Kids Poster Contest @ 11:30 in Bumps.
- Safety S'mores will be served on Thursday, and we will have our weekly Safety Pinata party on Friday.
- Hot chocolate and Safety Cookies will be served by Ambassadors.daily at the end of the day in the Base Area.
- Daily events by time and place will be posted on the Electronic Billboard in the Base Area.
- All Departments will be participating daily in this 9 day event. This will be a great time to have fun and be safe.
