Lace up your Mizunos and hit the trails because today, in case you haven't heard, is National Running Day!

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, Austin was ranked #10 on America's Fittest Cities list. If everyone started a running plan today, it could be possible to inch Austin closer to the #1 spot next year!

Not a runner? No problem. Running is a sport nearly anyone can do. Sure, you aren't going to be able to run a marathon right off the bat, but everyone has to start somewhere. Start slowly: try walking for 5 minutes, running for 2, walking for 5, etc. It won't seem as overwhelming if you take your time and pace yourself.

Have you always wanted to run a 5k, but weren't sure how to go about training for it? This 9-week program is your solution: Couch to 5k. With C25k, it's possible to transform yourself from a couch potato into a 5k runner!

If you're an experienced 5k runner, perhaps you are looking to move up to a 10k distance or even run your first half marathon. Need a structured training plan? Hal Higdon has several, as well as Cool RunningJeff Galloway, and Runner's World.

Whatever amount of time you'll be putting in today, whether it be 5 minutes, 30 minutes, or 90 minutes, is better than not participating at all. You never know, it might be the beginning of a long, wonderful running relationship! Load your iPod up with your favorite songs, and head on out to celebrate this healthy holiday. And of course, don't forget to stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle with you, or run a path where you will pass a convenience store.

Do you have a jampacked day and can't participate? Sign up for the upcoming 5k/10k Operation Honor Our Heroes in Cedar Park.

If you are planning on running the Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio 1/2 or Full Marathon, register today with the discount code RUNDAY to receive $15 off your registration fee!

How far will YOU be running today?
