Have you heard the latest “buzz?” A highly-anticipated holiday is hours away and Americans are ready to celebrate! Get ready to raise your glass, America. According to a WJLA ABC7 report published on Aug.15, one of the most refreshing days of the entire year is almost here! Aug. 16, 2014, is National Rum Day in the U.S.A!
While the origins of this “spirited” holiday are unknown, people have been enjoying rum for centuries. Originally used for medicinal purposes, rum was actually a particular favorite of pirates. Shiver me timbers! While the Caribbean is known for its distinct rum, rum is produced all over the world today.
In honor of National Rum Day, some pubs, bars and businesses across the nation will be servin’ up special deals on rum-inspired drinks. And as always, please drink responsibly.
National Rum Day 2014 Rum Events
Lions and tigers and bears - oh my! The Palm Beach Zoo will be hosting its Roar & Pour event on Saturday, Aug. 16. Besides great tasting food and live music, there will be special rum drinks on hand to enjoy. Roar & Pour kicks off at 4:30 and lasts until 9:30 p.m.
The Troy Liquor Bar, located at 675 Hudson Street in New York City, will celebrate National Rum Day with its “Original Sin” drink, consisting of Owney’s Rum, Crème De Framboise, and Prosecco. If you are in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by on Aug. 16 and enjoy this fabulous drink for just $8.00.
The Upstairs, located in the Kimberly Hotel at 145 E. 50th in NYC, will also be celebrating with the “Rum Service” consisting of Montecristo rum, honey, fresh pear and zest lime for $18. If you are in the area on Aug. 16, be sure to stop by.
Rum Runner Bus – If you’re in the Washington DC area, be sure to hop on the Rum Runner Bus for stops at a few of DC’s finest watering holes. Enjoy divine rum cocktails and delish appetizers and if you get stuck in traffic – no worries. You’ll get to enjoy a refreshing rum punch on the bus! Tickets are $45 – which includes food and beverage at four locations. This event takes place on Friday, Aug. 15, from 5:30 – 10:30 p.m.
All rum drinks including mojitos, cocktails, rum & cokes, will be half price at the Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City from 5 - 7:00 p.m on Friday and Saturday.
If you are in the mood for a sweet treat to eat, you’re in luck! O Face Doughnuts will be servin’ up Pina Colada donuts infused with Malibu Rum. Fabulous!
Cuba Libre will also be offering all of their 90-plus delicious rum selections at half-price for two nights during their happy hour on Friday and Saturday from 5 – 7:00 p.m. Plus, rum flight specials will also be available all month long.

The Leadbelly - NYC
1/2 oz Blackwell Rum
1 oz Jasmine infused Pierre Ferrand 1840 cognac
3/4 oz Aragoshi unfiltered Umeshu
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
1/4 oz Simple Syrup
1 oz Bunny Sparkling Sake
Mix ingredients. Save Sparkling Sake in shaker tin, shake to temperature, pour over ice in a rocks glass. Top with Bunny Sparkling Sake and garnish with a Shisho leaf to bring back the vivacious qualities back to the nose.
