While the origins of this “spirited” holiday are unknown, folks have been enjoying rum for centuries. This versatile drink, made by distilling fermented sugar from sugar cane and water, was a favorite of pirates. Shiver me timbers! This distilled alcoholic beverage, made from sugarcane byproducts, is produced all over the world although the Caribbean is known for its rum.
Whether you prefer yours straight up or in a tropical cocktail topped with a colorful umbrella, today is the perfect day to whet your whistle with a delightful rum cocktail. In honor of National Rum Day 2014, some restaurants, bars and pubs across America will be celebrating the occasion by offering special deals on rum-inspired drinks.
