Rum is one of the oldest liquors in the world as some of the first traces of rum production dates all the way back to the 17th century and the Caribbean sugarcane plantations. Another interesting fact about this beverage that so many people across the globe love is how the actual word "rum" came about. According to public records, the term "rum" was first used in The Colony of Connecticut in the year 1654.
Back then rum was definitely the drink of choice by many. To put it in perspective, over 12 million gallons of rum were consumed annually by the early colonists. Today Americans consume on average approximately 30 million gallons of rum a year.
