On Saturday, May 22, 2010, the event anticipated by many restaurateurs and food companies kicked off at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. The NRA Show is a showcase of dozens of food related exhibitors who want to sell their services or products to restaurant companies big and small. People from all over the world, with all different kinds of restaurants come to see the latest food trends and apply many of the ideas they have found in the show in their own restaurants. Everything from the most up-to-date point of sale software, to the newest frozen yogurt machines and flavors, plateware, bread, and soda, you name it, if it can be utilized in a restaurant, it's there. In addition, famous chefs like, Chicago's very own, Rick Tramonto of TRU, Tramonto's Steak & Seafood, Osteria di Tramonto and RT Sushi Bar & Lounge, held a book signing for those interested in purchasing his books.
The National Restaurant Association show also showcases new restaurant start-ups looking for franchisees. It's a great way to meet the minds behind these new concepts and find the hottest new restaurants not yet exposed. In addition, the Small Business Association has a booth, to help new start-ups with loans and other small business services. Besides meeting exhibitors, the NRA also holds education sessions for restaurateurs and professionals to teach and discuss new and innovative ways to help boost their business operations. Sessions are organized by the National Restaurant Association's industry imperatives.
This years show had a ton of exhibitors focused on gluten-free products for restaurants and their guests with these specific food requirements. It only makes sense as more and more people are finding out that they need to stick to a strict diet, yet still want to enjoy the pleasure of going to a restaurant. There were also many exhibitors who were focused on using organic ingredients, especially in soups. Soup exhibitors had a definite presence in the show, featuring unique flavors inspired by Asian and Mediterranean cuisine like red curry, and creamy saffron. You can very much see where the food trends are heading, if you didn't already have an idea.
In conclusion, the first day of the National Restaurant Association show was a great way to start the weekend in Chicago. The city is buzzing with Foodies, and most great restaurants in the city are fully booked. Just the way we want it!
