On March 1, 2013 schools, libraries, mom's clubs, and playgroups across America will be uniting to participate in the National Education Association's Read Across America Day. This is a day that has been designated as "an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss."

It is not too late to plan an event to participate on this day and to make it memorable for your families. From cooking fun meals to dressing up as Dr. Seuss characters, we can come together to not only make reading fun, but also to celebrate Dr. Seuss who has been significant in making reading exciting for generations.

If you don't want to do your own event or activity with your kids, join Desert Ridge Barnes and Noble on Saturday, March 2, at 11:00. The Lorax will be read along with activities and give-a-ways.

Dr. Seuss books are not the only ones suggested to read this day. Reading is fundamental, regardless of the author or subject. We have watched as books come to life with titles such as Where the Wild Things Are, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Star Wars, and The Notebook. From The Glass Menagerie, Pride and Prejudice, and Wuthering Heights to The Autobiography of Malcolm-X, The Outsiders, and The Invisible Man (by Ralph Ellison), reading teaches us to use our imagination, escape our worlds, or just learn about other cultures and people.

Make this day a day 1) to celebrate what you already, or 2) bring something new to your family and friends-a shared love for reading. Take the pledge to participate so that others in Phoenix can see how you will participate in Read Across America Day.

Who knows, this could also start the beginning of a book club for your moms and/or your kids or the opening of a door for your kids.

"Our goal is to show America's children the joy of reading and build a nation of readers-on March 1 and every day."
