While it is debatable of when and exactly who came up with original pina colada, legend says the earliest trace of the classic drink dates all the way back to the 19th century.
It's been said that Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí used to give his crew a cocktail that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum to boost their moral. Those ingredients are what we know today as a pina colada. Corfresi died in 1825 and unfortunately at that time the recipe for the piña colada was lost.
