Today is National Pina Colada Day! You don't need to be on a cruise, lounging at the beach or on some tropical island this afternoon to take time out to enjoy one of the most popular frozen drinks summer has to offer. If the pina colada is on your lists of favorites, than you have a great excuse to enjoy one today no matter where you are.

According to a Food.com report National Pina Colada Day is celebrated around the world every July 10. The pina colada was originally created in San Juan, Puerto Rico and has grown to become a favorite of millions of people worldwide. The ingredients for a classic pina colada are simple.

All you need to make this classic drink is pineapple or pineapple juice, rum, coconut cream and ice. That's it! Of course you can’t enjoy your pina colada without drinking one to the world famous song by Rupert Holmes.

"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" was released by Holmes back in 1979 and has been a cult classic ever since.

While it is debatable of when and exactly who came up with original pina colada, legend says the earliest trace of the classic drink dates all the way back to the 19th century.

It's been said that Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí used to give his crew a cocktail that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum to boost their moral. Those ingredients are what we know today as a pina colada. Corfresi died in 1825 and unfortunately at that time the recipe for the piña colada was lost.

Nowadays many bars and restaurants not only serve the classic pina colada, but they have put several twists on the old classic. If you are interested in some different recipes on how to make a pina colada, be sure to click here.
