Today is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. An entire generation was raised on these tasty sandwiches that often do double-duty as an entire meal or a snack. Not only are pb&j sandwiches easy to prepare, they are economical too.

In honor of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, here are some interesting facts about these two great favorite tastes.

The peanut:

1. The peanut is not truly a nut; it is a legume, which is defined as an edible seed enclosed in a pod.
2. Peanuts grow underground and not on trees; this is further evidence that they are not nuts.
3. Peanuts are one of the best sources of concentrated protein found in any food.
4. Peanuts and peanut butter are the most popular nut choices of people in the United States, with peanuts and peanut butter representing 67% of all nut consumption.
5. The peanut originated in South America and was spread by European explorers to other parts of the world.
6. George Washington Carver began studying peanut farming techniques in 1903. He is called the Father of the Peanut Industry for his work.
7. The peanut is grown in China, India, the United States, and some parts of Africa.
8. Peanuts are rich in heart-healthy, monounsaturated fat.
9. Peanuts are a good source of Vitamin E, niacin, and folate.
10. Peanuts are rich in antioxidants.

Jelly:

1. Jelly was first eaten by the Egyptians.
2. The main gelling agent in jelly is the protein, gelatin.
3. Jelly was once difficult and expensive to make and therefore was consumed only by the wealthy.
4. Jellies can be both savory and sweet.
5. Jelly was first combined with peanut butter and bread by soldiers during WW II.
6. Smucker’s and Welch's are the two largest jelly manufactures in the world.
7. Welch’s started in 1869 producing sacramental wine.
8. Welch’s first grape spread, which was called “grapelade,” was developed in 1918.
9. Concord jelly was introduced in 1923.
10. Smucker’s began in 1897; its first products were apple cider and apple butter.
