National parks fee-free days 2012: Martin Luther King Jr. Day 14 to 16 January

The Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend in 2012 is January 14 through 16, and most public lands are offering free entry. MLK Day marks the first of the 2012 national park fee-free days and RVers can visit any of the nation's national parks free. Many of the national monuments and other sites are also free for MLK Day: find a full list here.

As explained by the Grand Canyon, visitors can enter the Grand Canyon free on January 14, 15 or 16, but will have to pay fees if they're still there on the 17th. There is no reduction in camping fees, tours, or special programs at national parks during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. If you're going to the Grand Canyon, park staff would like to remind you that the South Rim is at 7,000 feet and that it's January: Wrap up warmly and prepare for the possibility of snow. In the Sedona/Red Rock area of Coconino National Forest, visitors during the Martin Luther King Jr. Day national parks fee-free weekend won't have to pay the Red Rock recreation pass. This follows an announcement, earlier this month that, starting next month, the area in which the pass is required has been reduced by 149,000 acres.

This is good news for boondockers who want to drive their rigs into the back-country, away from developed tourism. Maps will be available soon. Meanwhile, the full area, including heritage areas with Indian ruins, will be free during the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend. Call 928-203-2900 or visit the Red Rock Country website for details.
