April 16 - April 24 2011 is National Park Week. That means FREE admission at over 100 parks that normally charge admission. In New York, the participating parks include:
Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site
Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site
Martin Van Buren National Historic Site
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site
Saratoga National Historical Park
Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site
I haven't been to Martin Van Buren National Historic Site or Saratoga. However, I can recommend the others. Do be warned, though, that some of what is available for the Roosevelts sites only opens in May. If you want to hop over to New Jersey, or happen to be there already, you may want to visit the two New Jersey parks:
Thomas Edison National Historical Park
Morristown National Historical Park
See my review of Sagamore Hill and Edison's Lab in http://www.examiner.com/jewish-bridal-in-new-york/don-t-knock-a-cheap-date-part-5-historical-figures-and-their-homes Morristown is mentioned as a point of contrast with another historical place reviewed in http://www.examiner.com/jewish-bridal-in-new-york/mount-vernon-new-york. If you find yourself in a different location during that week, you can see the full list of participating National Parks at http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparksbystate.htm
What is nice about National Park Week falling out at this time of year is that it corresponds with spring break and the Passover holiday, which is a popular time for day trips. Some attractions can put quite a dent in an entertainment budget, so free is good.
The next free day for National Parks in 2011 is the first day of summer, June 21st. There will also be free admissions on September 24 and the weekend of Veterans Day, November 11-13th.
For other suggestions on where to go during the holiday or during the rest of the spring and summer season, see my review on outings in http://issuu.com/ariellabrown/docs/spring2011
