"Veterans need to take back this country," said Harry Prestanski, executive director, Ohio Veterans United. "The Republicans and Democrats are equally to blame for the Government Shut Down. But it was the President who has made the attack on Veterans personal by placing barricades at the WWII Memorial. This is an open mall. The barricades are there to 'hurt' us veterans. And since the shut down, Senator Harry Reid has refused to have bills that would help veterans and our military come to the Senate floor. All refuse to negotiate."
There is now a move underway to form a national organization to recruit veterans to run for public office at all levels of Government. At one time 75% of elected officials were veterans. Today only about 25% are. "Lets change that. Lets vote out the Harry Reids and Ted Cruzers that only seem to only use veterans for photo ops," said Prestanski. "Let us elect a Commander-in-Chief who will respect Veterans and truly support our military. Every political office from now on should be contested with a Veteran-running in the primaries against Democrats and Republicans and then in the general election as Independents if necessary."
In Ohio, there is Ohio Veterans United. Their mission is to educate citizens on the need to maintain a strong national defense and to help elect qualified veterans and like-minded non-veterans to office. They support limited government, lower taxes, personal freedom with responsibility, elimination of government waste, responsible spending of taxpayer dollars, a free-market enterprise, and the enforcement of Law and Order.
Specific goals of Ohio Veterans United include:
•Elect qualified Veterans to public office – regardless of party.
•Encourage donations to endorsed candidates through constant and proactive actions that highlight our candidates.
•Support our endorsed candidates.
•Oppose public officials who have failed our troops, Veterans, and nation on matters regarding National Defense.
•Build an organization to fight for Veterans now and in the future.
•Be a strong advocate for legislation that fully supports our troops, military families, Gold Star Families and Veterans.
•Work to ensure that every military absentee ballot is counted in every election.
•Encourage all veterans and their families to register and vote.
•Broaden our communications through regional television and printed materials and use new technologies and social media to reach a broader grassroots audience.
