National Grandparent's Day: Crafts, printables and cards for grandparents

Mee Lin Woon / StockXChngNational Grandparent’s Day is an annual event celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day in both the United States and Canada. It is also celebrated in the UK in October. This year, National Grandparent's Day is celebrated on September 13, 2009.

Marian McQuade is the founder of National Grandparents Day. President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4580, proclaiming National Grandparent’s Day in 1978, in order to “honor grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show lover for their children’s children and to help children become aware of strength, information and guidance older people can offer.”

This Grandparent’s Day, remind that grandparent in your life how very special he or she is. It’s also a great day to visit a resident in a nursing or retirement center.

    Hi,

I think Grandparents Day is also a wonderful opportunity to keep the memory of our parents alive for our children, if they've passed away, like mine have.

For anyone in the NYC area, we're celebrating the grandparents our children no longer have in their lives by having an event in Yonkers. Here's what we're doing:

Circle of Remembrance – We form a circle and say the names of our parents, out-loud. We also write messages to our parents (and our kids can write messages to their grandparents) on the balloons and we release them into the sky.

Make-a-Frame – Kids can decorate wooden frames and when we get home we can put pictures of our parents inside.

Plant Forget-Me-Nots - Kids can plant Forget-Me-Not seeds inside little pots with soil.

Potluck Lunch – Bring a dish your parents’ made that you want your children (and the rest of us!) to taste

Please join us! email me if interested, allison@allisongilbert.com or search "Parentless Parents" on Facebook.
