Perhaps not the most Christmasy feeling game with its nauseating list of Necromorphs but for the true gamer Dead Space 2 is an epic addition to the horror video game genre! Limiting a top 6 video games of 2011 is difficult because there were so many excellent releases this year but Dead Space 2 deserves a spot in your gamer’s Christmas list.
The horror genre in video games is done so well in this game. Decomposing corpses, icky Necromorphs that can only be killed by beheading, stomping on downed Necromorphs, and wallowing through dismembered Necromorphs! Ugh! However, for atmosphere, story, and combat Dead Space 2 rocks!
The upgrades from the first game in the franchise make gameplay a pleasure. The new security suit is streamlined and futuristic, the weapons are gratifyingly destructive, and the mood is horrific.
For those gamers who prefer the multiplayer experience Dead Space 2 incorporates a 2-4 player mode. Play as humans trying to achieve a goal or as the Necromorphs trying to stop them. Your weapon load-out is limited to only two weapons with better ones to be unlocked in increased levels. Improvements for the Necromorphs include improving their abilities and increasing health or damage.
Once you finish the main campaign you can download the DLC Dead Space: Severed. This is a single-player campaign that is two chapter long and only available for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Tips to keep in mind when playing Dead Space 2:
- Conserve your ammo. Don’t just shoot haphazardly hoping to hit something. Ammo can be plentiful until its not
- For some hilarity that will gross you out: stasis a Necromorph and then use the contact beam. The slowmo disintegration is too funny.
- Don’t just point and shoot, enjoy the story. It’s a good one!
Dead Space 2 may not be your traditional Christmas gift due to its high horror rating and probably not your first choice for kids, however, for the active gamer it should be among the top of your Christmas shopping list!
